Shares of companies linked to artificial intelligence and semiconductors sharply declined in Asian markets today (Monday), following calls from leaders of major tech companies to slow the pace of developing advanced artificial intelligence models, amid rising concerns about the risks of the technology and its misuse.
The stock of Japan’s SoftBank Group, which invests in OpenAI, fell by as much as 13.2% at the start of trading, while shares of memory chip maker Kioxia dropped 9.8%, and Tokyo Electron fell 3.7%.
Losses extended to other Asian markets, with South Korea’s SK Hynix down 5.3%, Samsung Electronics down 3.7%, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) declining by 1.2%.
In China, shares of memory chip maker CXMT fell 2.7%, and the stock of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) dropped 1.4%, while shares of Hong Kong-based Z.ai, which develops the GLM model series, plummeted by as much as 10.5% alongside the offering of shares at a discounted price.
The wave of decline followed a call from Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei for AI companies to slow the pace of developing advanced model capabilities to allow more time to address their risks, a call that was supported by OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and xAI’s CEO Elon Musk.
Pressure on the sector’s stocks has increased at a time when companies linked to artificial intelligence have become one of the main drivers of gains in global stock markets in recent years, making any potential change in the pace of technology development closely monitored by investors.
