The European Central Bank confirmed that the industrial transformation taking place in China is placing increasing pressure on European companies and limiting their ability to compete in global markets, noting that manufacturers in Germany are the most affected, particularly in the machinery and transport equipment sectors.
The bank explained, in an article within its economic publication, that the European Union’s share of global goods exports has declined, especially in the sectors and markets where China has strengthened its presence, notably in machinery and transport equipment, according to Western media outlets.
Data showed that Germany is the European country most similar to China in terms of export structure, making it more exposed to Chinese competition, while Italy recorded the lowest levels of similarity among the major European economies. Smaller countries, such as Ireland and Greece, were the least exposed to this competition.
These developments reflect the rising competition in sectors that have been key drivers of economic growth in several European countries for decades, which may increase pressure on the European Commission to enhance policies supporting local innovation and tighten trade protection measures, in an attempt to maintain the competitiveness of European companies and their share in global markets.
