The Bank of Japan raised the interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, marking the highest level since 1995, in a move that reflects the accelerating pace of monetary policy tightening since the normalization path began in March 2024.
The decision to raise the interest rate was approved by seven members, with two members opposing it, while the decision was widely anticipated. The bank clarified that the increase came amid risks of inflation rising above its target of 2%.
The increase follows just three months after the previous rate hike, compared to a six-month gap between increases during the last tightening cycle, reflecting the accelerating pace of monetary policy tightening.
General inflation recorded 1.9% in August, while the yen remained near historically weak levels, coinciding with a coordinated intervention between Tokyo and Washington to support the Japanese currency.
Following the decision, the dollar rose against the yen by 0.60% to 156.91 yen, at 06:20 AM Mecca time, while the yield on 10-year Japanese government bonds fell by about 4.9 basis points to 2.947%.
