The Japanese Ministry of Finance announced today that Japan and the United States have executed a coordinated intervention to buy yen, confirming that they will not hesitate to take additional joint steps if necessary, in a rare move aimed at halting the decline of the Japanese currency to its lowest levels in 40 years. The yen jumped by more than 1% to 155.20 yen against the dollar following the announcement, marking its strongest level since early May, after having dropped to around 164 yen to the dollar last month, its lowest level in four decades.
Avoiding Consequences
Analysts believe that this intervention reflects both countries’ commitment to limiting the decline of the yen and Japanese government bonds, in order to prevent the repercussions from extending to global markets, including increasing pressure on U.S. Treasury yields. This is the first coordinated intervention between the United States and Japan since 2011, when the two countries intervened to weaken the yen following the devastating earthquake that struck eastern Japan.
Facing Volatility
U.S. President Donald Trump stated yesterday, “The United States is helping Japan support the yen as a gesture of friendship and to enhance global economic stability.” Analysts noted that the intervention also serves American interests, as it limits the yen’s weakness, which reduces the impact of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The Japanese Ministry of Finance clarified in a statement that the recent coordinated intervention in cooperation with the U.S. Treasury aimed to address “excessive volatility and irregular movements” that the yen has experienced in recent months.
Decisive Measures
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama indicated that the government will not hesitate to implement additional coordinated interventions, but she refrained from commenting on whether authorities had intervened in the markets again during today’s trading. Chief Currency Officer in Japan, Atsushi Mimura, stated that the joint intervention represents the fruit of the alliance between Japan and the United States, affirming that the government will continue to coordinate its foreign exchange market policy with the monetary policy of the Bank of Japan to limit the yen’s decline.
For his part, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Piesen confirmed the recent joint intervention, noting that Washington will not hesitate to participate in additional interventions if necessary. He added that the United States strongly supports the decisive measures taken by Japan in the market and monetary policy to address the significant decline in the value of the yen, reiterating his call for the Bank of Japan to continue raising interest rates.
