The Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75% during its meeting today, despite ongoing inflation rising and clearly exceeding the target level of 2%. Markets had a 76% expectation of maintaining interest rates in the current meeting, according to LSEG data, but investors still lean towards a rate hike of at least 25 basis points during the upcoming November meeting.
Widening Gap
The decision to hold rates reflects the widening gap between the Bank of England and its counterparts among major central banks. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, marking its first increase since 2023, while the European Central Bank raised rates for the second time this year after the first increase in June. The Bank of Japan is expected to raise rates at the conclusion of its meeting tomorrow.
Rising Inflation
The Bank of England has not made any changes to interest rates throughout 2026 so far, having lowered them by 25 basis points in December 2025. Data released showed that the inflation rate in the UK rose to 3.1% in August, marking the first increase above 3% since March, while the UK’s Office for National Statistics indicated that rising fuel prices were the main driver of inflation, with the cost of motor fuel jumping by 23% year-on-year.
